As we head into the holiday season and approach the close of another extraordinary year, I want to offer inspiring and empowering words and also give you some helpful and even delicious ideas for improving your health in the coming year.

What comes to mind first for me is that I am thankful for the passing of this "old" year and look with much excitement and thanks to bringing in the new. In other words, this is a season of letting go of the past and being grateful. I believe all of us on some level know how important it is to give thanks and practice gratitude. In case you aren't entirely sure of how that daily practice can improve your life, here are the wonderful ways that gratitude journaling, or even taking time each day to reflect on what you're thankful for, can improve your health and wellbeing:

  • Improves your physical health
  • Improves your mental health
  • Improves personal relationships
  • Helps you sleep better
  • Helps manage stress response and increase resilience
  • Decreases anxiety, aggression, etc.

In my wellness role, it really is my goal to help everyone live better longer, and this simple daily practice may be the most powerful tool you can have in your wellbeing toolbox!

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and I am happy to share that we have added another "powerful" tool to our wellness offerings. Taking the Mediterranean Diet to the next level with the "Green Mediterranean Diet" can help you reduce your risk of diabetes by helping to lower weight and specifically abdominal fat, which helps to decrease the risk of diabetes and overall helps prevent chronic disease. Take a look below at Mankai, the world's tiniest green vegetable!

Being the holiday season, it is also important to know that you really can enjoy some treats as well. That said, one of my favorites this time of year is baking my cranberry oatmeal cookies. This is a twist on a favorite cookie to incorporate a seasonal superfood - beautiful cranberries! (I know you will thank me for this one!)

Wishing everyone a very happy, healthy, and peaceful holiday season. Thank you for being a Member of Castle Connolly Private Health Partners!

Yours in health and Happy Thanksgiving,

Susan Greeley, MS, RDN
